Description

Samuel Hammond is returning to the podcast today to discuss the relationship between capitalism and social justice.

Sam was prompted to write about this by an insensitive Pepsi commercial that caused some controversy in April 2017.

The controversial ad featured generic protesters and Kendall Jenner sharing a Pepsi with police. While the ad was insensitive and more than a little absurd, Sam pointed out that Pepsi has a history of promoting social justice and racial harmony through its marketing.

Back in 1940, Pepsi was a small player compared to Coca-Cola; the latter selling 25 sodas for each one Pepsi sold. In order to compete, Pepsi’s CEO Walter S. Mack Jr. decided to do something the other companies weren’t doing: marketing specifically to African Americans.

“In 1947, [Mack Jr.] hired Edward F. Boyd, an African-American adman who later became known as one of the fathers of niche-marketing. Boyd crafted ads for Pepsi that celebrated black cultural and professional achievements, and above all portrayed African-Americans as normal, middle-class consumers. It was this marketing push that ultimately drove Pepsi’s rise to the number two soda company in America.”

In pre-civil-rights America, this was a major achievement, and it served a deeper social purpose by extending social recognition to black Americans.

We also discuss some other interesting niche marketing campaigns, like Subaru’s marketing strategy targeting lesbians in the 1990s. Finally, we tie it all back to capitalism as a force promoting diversity and inclusion, with references to Becker’s work on taste-based discrimination.

  • Seems to be mostly a discussion of branding, but there’s a push by one group to have Ƀ be the symbol to denote bitcoin, while another group would like to keep B⃦. The problem, as explained in an article at Coindesk, is this: Bitcoin has long been denoted as B⃦, however it is not recognized as a Unicode symbol by the Unicode Consortium, which develops such standards. Having a symbol in Unicode form means it would work in different fonts and formats and would help to better convey the cryptocurrency to the masses in various forms of media. The Unicode Ƀ symbol is already recognized as a Unicode symbol by the Unicode Consortium, and therefor is accessible pretty widely. Curious if anyone here is married, as it were, to one or the other symbol. Me? I’ve been using “BTC” to denote bitcoin. 😛 Cheers!

  • Hello Liberty Community! We wanted to introduce ourselves as the latest liberty-based podcast to join the net. We recently chatted with Jeffery in an episode we will be releasing next week and he suggested we join the site to say hello, to meet fellow liberty-minded folks, and share our content with you! Here’s the most recent episode released today! Feel free to get a hold of us and let us know what you think! In their most controversial episode yet, Danny and Michael arrive very late to the party to plumb the depths of the possibly well-intentioned, though likely intellectually faulty social justice movement and find they have very different opinions as to why the movement exists. • I have been paying attention to the craziness going on over on YouTube and I think it would be a good idea for all of us to post links to alternate social media sites. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are starting to try to shut down a lot of people so I think it is a good idea to start finding backups at the very least. I will list the few I am aware of I will add I have not yet used any of these… https://www.full30.com/ this is a firearms based site and it has come up a few times in conversation on other sites as the back up location for most of the major firearms content producers should YouTube and Facebook start shutting them out. https://www.minds.com/ this has been recommended by multiple YouTubers as a back up site should things get to bad. My understanding is it is still in beta however. If anyone is wondering what YouTubers they are Black Pigeon Speaks and Computing Forever but my understanding is a LOT of YouTubers have already moved there. https://becandid.com/ This one was mentioned by Black Pigeon Speaks and I think it is for mobile only but I am simply putting everything I am aware of on this list. If you are aware of any other sites please add to this list. Also goes without saying liberty.me

  • Hi everyone, My partners and I recently opened an online store with liberty-oriented Tees and stickers — www.WryGuys.com — and we’re now exploring our options for marketing and promotion. To date, we’ve started Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts, we’ve done some SEO work, and we’ve also run a handful of banner ads on Antiwar.com and the Libertarian Reddit. (We’re donating a portion of the profits to AW.com and the Future of Freedom Foundation.) My partners and I are exceedingly busy with other responsibilities — i.e., full-time jobs, grad school, families, etc. — so this venture is simply a fun side business for which we have limited time. However, we’re intent on success, and we hope to build a venture that 1) consistently covers its monthly expenses, and 2) provides a source of reliable funding for AW.com and the FFF. The Internet’s awash in opinions about marketing methods and techniques, and we’re newcomers in a notoriously competitive market segment (i.e., Tees and stickers). We want to ensure we’re making wise use of our limited time, so we’re looking for a knowledgeable, liberty-minded marketer with experience appealing to libertarians, AnCaps, Constitutionalists, and Voluntaryists. For now, we’re simply looking for an initial, strategic consultation, but if we find the right person, it could certainly develop into something more. QUESTION: Do you know of someone who fits the bill? If so, please post below, or drop me a line at info AT wryguys.com. Thanks, Scott …
