The mother of a four-year-old son, Heather Hironomus, tearfully signed an order allowing for the circumcision of her boy, so that she could be released from prison. The event has stirred a national debate about the necessity of circumcision, and the question of whether all children should be allowed the right to bodily integrity.

Hironomus was imprisoned after she fled with her son, attempting to avoid the fulfillment of an agreement with the boy’s father that would see him circumcised. She’s now taken center stage on the issue, with anti-circumcision activists rallying to her cause, raising $50,000 in legal bills to defend her son, Chase Hironomus. The father wishes to circumcise the boy so that he looks like him.

  • Here in America, circumcision is seen as a minor surgery that really is no big deal: one doctor even said that circumcision should be done routinely like vaccination. {1} Truthfully, I’m disgusted. Circumcision is genital mutilation, it isn’t even to be compared with vaccination. If a doctor came out and said that every woman should have her clitoris removed routinely at infancy like vaccination he would be hanging from a noose by tomorrow morning. People are disgusted with FGM, and rightly so, but they don’t even think of MGM as MGM: so they have a doctor or Rabbi hack of half their sons penis and destroy 75% of his ability to feel pleasure, {2} for the exact same reasons that Muslims mutilate their daughters genitals: religious, hygiene, or aesthetic reasons. They don’t even think of it as mutilation, they think of it as just like a vaccination or something like that. This is like if it were commonplace to go chopping peoples heads off, and people justified it by likening it to a haircut. It’s not a goddamn haircut! Just like circumcision is not a goddam vaccination! It is genital mutilation, and I am disturbed that people even justify it that way. Circumcision refers to the removal of normal and healthy male genital tissue which accounts for half of a males erogenous tissue, and which has 20,000 nerve endings. The female equivalent would be to completely remove her clitoris, but to leave the labia intact. Which, by the way, is illegal, and a felony- yet you can have a doctor strap down your newborn baby and, without medical necessity, remove half of his genital organs. There is no f*cking difference between this and Female Genital Mutilation! If Female Genital Mutilation is defined as: “All procedures involving partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons as defined by the World Health Organization.” {3} Then Male Genital Mutilation should be defined as: “All procedures involving partial or total removal of the male external genitalia or other injury to the male genital organs for non-medical reasons.” And Circumcision fits this definition. So why is FGM seen as barbaric (which it is), whereas Circumcision does the same exact thing, and it’s seen as nothing more than a vaccine? The answer is very simple, yet terrifying: we live in a world where men have no rights- men are not seen as people but like beasts of labor. This is why it is acceptable to mutilate male genitalia, this is why men ages 18-26 are subject to the draft and this is why women see it as acceptable to ask their husbands to get a vasectomy, and the problem goes so deep, and is so thoroughly embedded in our culture, that most people don’t even know it’s there. Despite the fact that circumcision is mutilation, and on the same scale as FGM, most people never even think of it that way, and view it as the equivalent of a vaccine. Some even go so far as to rewrite history and turn this into a man-bashing session: “Male circ is not a method of controlling males and their sexuality. In nearly every culture that has ever existed (and one might argue that this is even more true of cultures that circumcise), males are dominant.” {3} First of all, circumcision because popular in the U.S. for the purpose of controlling male sexuality, particularly masturbation. Second of all, of course males are dominant in cultures that practice circumcision! This is how it works in cultures that mutilate genitals- just like in Islamic countries it is mostly women who want their daughters genitals mutilated. Now, a lot of you are going to be like “but there are health benefits to circumcision!” {4} Good God- what the f*ck is wrong with you? The Muslims claim there are benefits to FGM, {5} and these benefits are identical to those of circumcision! We don’t cut out our daughters clitoris’s because it’s easier to clean do we? You people are sickening! {1}. {2}. {3}. {4}. {5}.
