All Value and All Manners Emanate From Human Virtues.
If the free market was in operation human virtues would continually gain refinement and prominence and manners would reflect that human process.
This is the same argument that a great number of socialists use. They say, “If mankind lived under a socialist system, eventually greed would cease to be a trait, and the socialist system would work because each person would willingly work as hard as they could for the good of their fellow mankind, without a need for a profit incentive.”
Human virtues would probably evolve slightly, seeing as morality has probably evolved, but they would not evolve at any noticeable rate in either a free-market or socialist environment. Evolution is an extremely slow process.
The main difference is that the free market rewards existing virtues, and socialism rewards existing tendencies towards crime and corruption. This is different to saying that the free market instills inherent goodness. If you transplanted a capitalist population into a socialist economy, the socialist system would still be dysfunctional.
All this is from a utilitarian point of view which disregards the further complication of Natural Rights and other such.
“If you transplanted a capitalist population into a socialist economy” is part of your response which indicates that you didn’t quite understand what I meant. By ‘free market’ I mean: where knowledge flows freely and all opportunities and benefits of social cooperation are fully available for voluntary choices. This is far, far different from the socialist argument.
Human values undergo refinement continually and optimally when there is freedom.
“Transplanting” is an imaginary and therefore nonsensical point.
Are manners nurture or nature? Are virtues nurture or nature. If not one or the other, but a combination of the two, to what degree of either? Now since every “one” on the Planet is an individual (one of a kind), how do you apply any theory or rule for the evolution of manners?
