Anyone familiar with Neuro Linguistic Programming?
I ask this curiously because I haven’t seen or heard much mention of it anywhere at all over the years.

Anyone here familiar with NLP?

Must be a glitch, I posted this under Philosophy & Economics: General and It shows up under Travel & Internationalization
I’m only familiar with it from a purely layman standpoint in that I understand what it is, and nothing more. A way of speech/speaking that persuades the listener to behave in a particular manner by tapping into the sub-conscious of the listener. I read a book called “The Easy Way to Quit Smoking” by Allen Carr, which supposedly used NLP methods. It’s a kind of way to hypnotize a listener using particular language mechanics… and as such can also be used in written language, in that the listening doesn’t have to necessarily be external audio, but can also be internalized speech. I don’t know if it works. I don’t know how it works. I also heard once that President Obama employed NLP techniques when giving his speeches, which is why he has such a unique inflection to his voice… but who knows if that’s even remotely true.
That pretty much sums it up. It’s a very interesting topic. One I will say that’s plagued with over exaggerated claims and less than credible information. Despite its many shortcomings the result of researching NLP has been a very positive experience. It has at the very least sparked a deep interest in communication and how we think.
“When one considers the natural bias in map making, never again will he or she view a map as an accurate depiction of the world. Map making is like sculpting. What matters is not only that which has been left to view, but also that which has been whittled away.”
I don’t recall who wrote that.
NLP is like a map, it’s a very small inaccurate chunk of a much larger body of knowledge. I’d like to write an article about NLP sometime. I think that even if not from NLP directly, everyone would benefit greatly from a heightened communicational awareness.
As for Mr. Obama, I’ve never heard any of his speeches. I’d assume that if he isn’t teleprompted he’s definitely been groomed to speak a certain way to maximize the impact of his speech. The book Forensic Linguistics by John Olsson explains that it’s difficult to mask incongruities for even a short period of time because we consciously decide what to say and unconsciously decide how to say it. If one were so inclined I’m sure there would be a mountain of linguistic anomalies that occur in Obama’s unprompted speeches.
If you wrote an article about NLP I’d read it 🙂 I find it to be very interesting as well!
You can’t tell, but I’m using NLP right now to control the entire universe. :/
Yes, I have a practitioner and a master practitioner certification in it. NLP is still around, though it’s largely fallen out of favor in the U.S. due to the flood of poorly trained practitioners who made big promises about how they could revolutionize the business world but lacked the skills to deliver on those promises. However, I believe NLP is still very big in Europe.
