I have attended every ” Capitalism and Morality” since inception.I look forward to them each year, a wonderful form of brain candy. Thank you jayant, for the time and trouble to put on these fine events. I intend to speak this year if you will have me. My proposed topic will be so called ” Corporate Social Responsibility”, and a more appropriate replacement ethos I call “Corporate Social Opportunity”

    I’ve attended in the past. It is an excellent event. As great as the speakers are, I most enjoy meeting and conversing with the other attendees. It is good for the soul to be surrounded by so many pleasant, intelligent and ethical people.

I just checked the site dedicated to your event, Jayant, and I am intrigued by the quality of the speakers and the relatively smallness of the event, which is more inviting than larger venues like Freedomfest. On the other hand, I was a bit put off by the your piece (the West and the rest) that stresses the role of religion in creating the respect of the individual that you put (rightly, in my opinion) at the root of the Western civilization. I am not a believer, although I have never been against religion, rather I am simply not interested in it. But I always feel uncomfortable when I see religion (or tthe usual weberian culture, for that matter) as the main explication of an ideology to which I identify. As the beautiful speech of Lawrence Reed about Ancient Rome implies, the acknowledgement of the natural right of private property predates the Christian tradition, and even the golden age of Greek philosophy. I personally believe that the only cause of human development is simply blind competition, that beautiful algorithm that works splendidly in nature as in human affairs. Said that, if I manage to organize some business trip to the US around the times of the conference, I’ll try to be there this year. Is it capped at certain number of participants? If I decide to come at the last moment, may I find the conference already full and therefore I won’t be able to attend? Thanks.

Massimo: So far we have always accommodated those who did not register earlier. I am sure we can again. Just be aware that the ticket price does go up in April and then again in July.

It really is a great gathering. The format is casual, and the facilities are great. Jayant has organized it so that following the session there is an informal gathering, either a picnic in a waterfront park, or a casual meal in a pub, depending on weather.

Jayant and Rajni ( co organizer) must really enjoy it, as it is very well run, and cheap enough that they must work for months, and still lose money.

Looks intriguing; wish I could attend.

I have recently been immersing myself in a lot of books and videos and debates involving Christian theologians, philosophers and ministers on a variety of topics; and I’m finding a disturbing trend among many of these thinkers whom I otherwise admire in various ways, where they speak of free markets as an individualistic distortion of the gospel, which breaks down community, charity, etc. as opposed to outreach to the poor with health care and such through the vehicle of the State. They are sadly missing the *voluntary* nature of the Love which Christ preached, which didn’t involve using coercive aggression against others to force them to love their neighbors and enemies but instead centered on helping others to be transformed within, with love of neighbor being a voluntary outflowing from that change. They seem to miss the passages where Christ told his followers that they should not rule over one another as the various rulers of the surrounding world did.

This all has me wondering, though: is there much of an effort by libertarians to reach out to these kinds of influential thinkers to have a dialogue about how voluntaryism rather than coercion actually builds community and is more in line with loving one’s neighbor, and indeed one’s enemies when it comes to foreign policy, etc.? I think it is of great detriment to society if the leaders of churches and other faith groups are not helping their communities to understand these things. Without proper feedback mechanisms in the culture with these institutions properly defining what loving one another really looks like, I’m convinced that liberty will continue to fade as coercion via the State is looked to as an essential vehicle for community.

You might find a cheaper place outside downtown. Just look for a place that is close to a skytrain station. Commute by the skytrain is easy and cheap.
