Hi Michael! I just started homeschooling my 10 year old son last year, after being in both private and public schools. We plan to homeschool again next year.
Our family has learned a lot from each other this year. Deliberate, dedicated home education takes a lot of stamina and patience 🙂 I also had to learn to not get too emotionally invested in the comments of friends and family, both positive and negative. For me, this was a year that I had the privilege of observing how my son learns best and giving him the time to delve deeply into his areas of interest. Although our public school experience was not all negative, the opportunity to let his education unfold at his pace has been a gift.
One challenge I’ve had is finding elementary-level Libertarian friendly history curriculum. So much of it is so heavily editorialized. I’d love to hear how other homeschool families are doing this.

Wow that is amazing Audra. I can’t help you with the liberty oriented history course but I am sure as things progress on this site I am sure somebody will come along who can!

I should have said, it’s not exactly elementary level, but I’m not sure it needs to be. Watch with your son and learn together!
I grew up homeschooled and loved it. We began homeschooling our kids, but the more we read and experienced, the more radical we became. We’re now much more unschooling than homeschooling. The Sudbury Valley model and several other books (Gatto, Illich, Holt…) helped us get more radical.

I am intrigued by the concept of homeschooling and other alternatives, but I would also a bit nervous about making the jump. My oldest daughter is about to turn seven and is just finishing 1st grade at a public school. As public schools go, it is not a bad one, but she is a very quick learner and I am concerned that she may get bored with the pace of her classes. She is also really interested in history and law (my fault on that one), and I don’t know if she will learn much about those subjects in her school anytime soon. I am looking forward to hearing a lot more about various people’s experiences on here.
