Pretty revolting. This sort of brings up the idea of manipulating children, I guess instead of “discipline.” The book Punished by Rewards is an excellent book that reveals the dark side of bribes. We read it very early on in our parenting adventure and believe it helped us. Generally, manipulating children either by punishment or rewards is dishonest and will come back to cause bigger problems later on, although I still can’t totally rule out misdirection as a tool. Hmmmm.

The wife got the kids to exercise today like this:

“who wants to go to the river?”

Kids:

“I do, I do!”

her:

“Great! Get on your socks and shoes and meet me outside!”

Kids ago outside and mom is already waving from the end of the driveway. Kids run to catch up and next thing they’re all walking a two mile round trip down to the river.
