New Encroachments by Government
I’ve just recently blogged about Insidious Government Encroachment which I believe would provide the basis on a useful discussion here. I’d be interested and hearing the views and experiences of others from this group.
Vancouver’s ban on doorknobs is an insidious encroachment. New buildings must now use handles instead of doorknobs.
Now Jeffrey will need to write a new book: “Hack your door”.
Roger, that is an amazing revelation!
I might comment that while I agree that I prefer handles and levers to knobs on doors, I don’t in any way approve of it being regulated and required as are seat-belts, baby car seats, or wearing a bicycle helmet.
Handles and knobs both have their place.
I prefer handles on my front door and the main through doors, because I can easily open the door while carrying shopping bags (using an extended little finger).
On the other hand, the doorknob on the inside of my pantry is the perfect place to store elastic bands, and I have been known to hang the occasional scarf on a bedroom doorknob. The doorknob on the utility room door can hold a clothes hanger or two while I’m ironing shirts.
A regulator who would prohibit one or the other is showing his disdain for the quality of life of the people he is regulating, by denying them a free choice.
For sure, some disabled people find handles easier to use. However, it’s a straightforward task to exchange one for the other at any time in a building’s life.
In a few more years, maybe doors will be activated by voice or touch or thoughts, but Vancouverites will still need to put a handle on them to satisfy their bureaucrat.
We should not be surprised if at some point each door handle or faucet will have to be individually certified with a corresponding certification fee being charged for the “service”.
“Workshop To set Medical 3D Printing Rules”?!?!
This is horrifying. As if Centralized Healthcare wasn’t enough, now they are trying to reign in what little progress we can hope for. We should inform this debate and try to limit the regulation of this industry.
Since I have a type of craftsman doors that I bought at http://caldwells.com/exterior-doors/craftsman-doors, used for both front and back doors, I much prefer the use of handles, they bring unique experience for doors, since they are craftsman’s made.
