I just registered and this site feels a bit slow to me. Did you get more traffic than expected? If so that’s awesome! But maybe you need to add some more hardware and/or bandwidth?
Other than that I love it here so far. 🙂

Site feels a bit slow?

I hear you! I think it will get better though. It’s just the beginning, still beta of course. I am impressed with how great everything is, and the sites not even ‘open’ yet!
Once it moves out of beta will the site work better on my Android?
Yes, it should. We’re aware of the issues with smartphone displays and it’s also a priority for us.
The fact that it seems to have been built on WordPress may be a major factor in this.
I don’t know what you did (if anything), but the site definitely feels faster today. Keep up the good work!
Good to hear! We’ve been working on some optimizations and will continue to do so.
This site is almost unusably slow. I’d recommend killing some of the features here, as this is a coding and plug-in, swamp. Do some pruning.
Also, check the bandwidth and servers. I’m sure I’m not the only one having this problem.
Oh, and I’m not on a mobile device, I have high speed broadband, and normally don’t experience a freeze-slowing, like I do here.
Slow for me as well even with 15 megs, but hey, for the price and the SUPERB quality of content, I don’t mind waiting. (That might have something to do with the fact I’m in Panama, which is the Land of S-L-O-W EVERYTHING, and am just used to waiting….) If you think liberty.me is slow, visit udemy.com. That puppy gives new meaning to “slow.”
Thanks for your feedback guys! Where does the site feel slowest for you? Any one area in particular? I can relay any details you have to the dev team.
Hello Josh, thanks for the inquiry. Anywhere I click to navigate, to different areas, I get a “spinning wheel” of slowness. I’d almost forgot what that’s like, as normally don’t get it. Trying to get to the discussion board, seems particularly slow, or the main page.
Hi Josh, I really wasn’t paying much attention (had some other sites open and was switching back and forth) so I won’t be much help to you. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Firefox is involved with the slowness at my end…every time they put out a new update, there’s are problems for a while. Thanks for being on top of things at your end!
Thanks again! The front page has more visuals than most sites, which might account for varying load times. Not sure why discuss is acting up though. I’ve let the devs know and they’ll be looking into it soon!
Hmm, that’s odd, I just tested the homepage at around 2 seconds load time. The discussions page is a bit slow at around 7 seconds but not unusable. Elizabeth, would you mind clearing your cache and cookies and see if that helps? I’m also curious where you’re located. It might help us narrow down where the issue is originating.
Cleared cache and cookies. Was on Firefox. Switching to Chrome to see if any difference.
In US midwest
Alright, so location shouldn’t be a significant issue. Let me know if switching browsers helps.
The discussion section of the site seems very slow to me. The rest seems to be ok. Unfortunately the discussion section is the part which needs to be quickest because you flip between pages more frequently. I think the used interface really needs to be slimmed down on the site too. There are way too many buttons everywhere and the permanent bar at the top really needs to be fixed to the top of the page rather than to the top of the screen and made smaller. The row of icons for each section of the site should somehow be changed as well. Maybe to a dropdown menu somewhere with just text and small icons rather than big huge icons.
edit: I just made a mockup of one idea. I just moved the icons to the top bar. If you hovered over the icon you could get the description of what it is. I also made the top bar smaller and removed the word “Liberty Karma” because I’d hope it was self explanatory. I imagine the top bar not following you anymore as you scroll down the screen.
Heres the mockup:

Hey Joe, I agree that discussions could use a speed boost. It’s the one big section of the site that has been trickiest to improve speedwise but we will keep working on it.
I like your mockup but we’re quite a ways out from being able to implement something like that. Currently, when you scroll down the main nav bar should disappear and it should pop back into place when you scroll back up. If that’s not working, you may want to check that the script isn’t being blocked by an add-on.
