Notice much of the focus in the rhetoric regarding mass killings is on the type of weapon that is used. Many are pointing out that there are fewer mass shootings in countries other than the US. This is true. However, do we really care the about reducing the deaths caused by a particular weapon or deaths overall?
Comparing all rampage killings…[Read more]

Anyone have any recs for purchasing a mid-length Daniel Defense AR in 556 re all the sub-models and configuration options (the paradox of choice?)
-
Well you all ready chose the manufacture,caliber,length. There are no low quality or bad options at Daniel Defense. Just high prices. All that left is to fined a color that matches your shoes.
I suggest spending less money on buying a gun and more money on enjoying it aka range time and a gun and more money on ammo and range time.
The only…[Read more]

What do you plan to give your mother, mother in law, daughter or grandmother for Mother’s Day. How about empowering them to defend themselves?

I think my Mother is at the point where she can not reasonably defend herself with a firearm. My sister has expressed an interest but is squeamish. I just gave my wife a Walther PPX 9mm. I am glad you feel good about your Hi Point. I, however, will not buy anything from them as long as they refuse to sell guns with high capacity magazines. There…[Read more]

Anyone here machined a receiver before? Or has machining experience of any kind?
-
Not yet but I can’t wait to get my hands on this thing.
-
@georgehoffmann I have one… And will do a couple lowers for myself sometime this year.
-
@stateexempt I would love to hear how your experience went with using this rather than machining it out by hand. I can see a lot of other applications for this in the future.

Larry Vickers is a solid YouTube subscription. Lots of new weapons and he has a ton of old and Soviet era weapon demonstrations. Definitely a great website. If you all like parodies, check out Dynamic Pie Concepts as well. They are a hoot!

Does anybody like to watch any gun channels on YouTube?
I really enjoy Mrgunsngear, Nutnfancy, and IV8888. Whenever they talk politics (the last two more than the first, who generally doesn’t) it gets a bit cute at times (generally, they are constitutionalist conservative types), but they all seem to have a lot of knowledge and I enjoy their…[Read more]

Nate had some good points, that are even more appropriate from a prepping standpoint. Very reliable, simple to clean and maintain, and the availability of them would mean parts would be easy to come by in almost any situation.
Heard it said that the 1911 is the gun for experts as it requires a lot of maintenance but is worth it in the right…[Read more]

I carry a Glock, but there are some aspects of other guns that I prefer over Glocks. I do prefer single action triggers such as a 1911 or SA/DA which is cocked. I do prefer the ergonomics of H&K or Walther, and Steyr has some great ideas too.
Advantages of a Glock: They are rugged, reliable, and accurate under any conditions and abuse, with more…[Read more]

Since I got issued a Glock (during my military services) and had the chance to test them out a bit I can say this…
They are high quality and in relation to some others very reliable and solid, almost sturdy. The downside, at least for the military version I got, is that there were no or very little possibilities to customize them for individual…[Read more] -

Since we’re talking about preferences then no, I don’t particularly like Glocks. I own two of them and they’re decent for what they are, but as Mike said, the grip is definitely a decision point for most. It’s not just the angle, but the size of the thing; I own plenty of double-stacks and the Glock grip it by far the fattest.
The other gripe is…[Read more]
I’ve been tempted to get an FFL license, but I don’t want to open my house up to inspection without a warrant. I thought that was one draw back to it?
I got over it.
Manuel, I would love to hear about your experience. I have debated getting my FFL on and off over the years and always fell on Finnian’s side. I would like to know what prompted your decision to go ahead, how long it took, and any positives/negatives you took away from the experience. Thanks!
@georgehoffmann
You should read this entire multi part series:
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/02/20/home-based-ffl-part-1-overview/
I think there are at least 9 or 10 (maybe more) parts to it now. It’s fairly detailed and my experience was somewhat similar. I read this many times before I went for it.
I am interested in your experience too. It would certain help to understand the process better from someone who’s been through it!
Thanks for the above link and added info.
@finnian
Read the entire thing first and then I can answer specific questions. There is a lot to tell.
