The Passion of Ayn Rand (1999): Film Review

  • Martin Nicholls

What do you think of the film ‘The Passion of Ayn Rand’ starring Helen Mirren, which is based on the book written by Barbara Branden? I personally thought the movie was excellent and my favourite part of it was the discussion of social metaphysics.

I’m curious as to what Ayn Rand’s ‘cult’ thought of the film as opposed to those who are sympathetic to Objectivism or those who would call themselves Objectivists? For example, in terms of the philosophy what did her cult say that Branden got wrong?

The only reaction that I recall is to say that Barbara Branden was a horrible, immoral person and anyone who would read her book or watch the film is a moral degenerate. Under such circumstances, I expect anyone who would criticize the content of the film and thereby admit to having viewed it would be ostracized out of the cult.

However, perhaps there were more substantive responses that I do not recall or did not see.
