Please don’t take this personally; it’s not meant to be offensive, merely an observation on the current state of things.
It seems this group may be a microcosm of the seasteading movement as a whole; not much activity, maybe not much interest, seemingly going nowhere (or at least moving at an agonizingly slow pace).
Frustration with this reality…[Read more]

Cybersteading
Introduction – Why a computer network based in international waters might provide a fast and relatively low cost way to begin building a free economy.

As I understand it, the cruise industry isn’t far from that model, right now. Most countries don’t tax citizens on income earned outside their borders, so the vast majority of cruise ship employees effectively live tax-free. For US citizens who are cruise ship employees to avoid offshore taxation of their income, they are required to reside o…[Read more]

I bet this would attract people sooner and more easily than the standard idea of a seastead. We need cruise ships that offer (semi)permanent residence.

And the problem with the cyberwork is the bandwidth. I told Joe Quirk of the Seasteading Institute recently that the main thing that would keep me off a seastead is the speed of my Internet access. He told me I was far from the first to say so.

I don’t view seasteading as any different from any other new technology or industry. The initial purchase price is always quite high. Microwaves, televisions, automobiles, airplanes, space travel, etc. Early adoption will always be more expensive until the methodology is fine tuned and mass produced.

From the research of the seasteading institute, they are talking about price points of around $500 per square foot for a seastead in sheltered waters and around twice that for open waters. This lower price point is slightly less than real estate in San Francisco, and much less than Singapore or Japan, though its higher than most people in the US…[Read more]
