Gladstonian Liberal started the topic Boris Johnson: liberal or conservative in the forum UK Libertarians 4 months, 2 weeks ago
With the election of Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative party might we see a revival of liberalism? In a matter of hours, Boris will become Prime Minister and begin announcing his Cabinet. He is despised by the Left who paint him as a reactionary but his parliamentary voting record is liberal on personal issues. He has said again and…[Read more]

Gladstonian Liberal replied to the topic Why is there no Libertarian movement in the UK? in the forum UK Libertarians 8 months, 1 week ago
Perhaps what is missing in the UK is an organisation similar to the Foundation for Economic Education. It exists to educate people about free markets and liberty. It doesn’t lobby although it does have articles that argue about policies. However, unlike Britain’s Adam Smith Institute or IEA, it doesn’t advocate or engage in policy discussions.…[Read more]

Liberal Anarchist started the topic Brexit: politicians undermine themselves in the forum UK Libertarians 8 months, 1 week ago
While tedious and at times nonsensical, Brexit has lifted the curtain on the House of Commons and the abilities of our elected representatives. The danger here is that something uglier and shrill replaces the mostly mild-mannered MPs. But it could just make people think that they might be better off running things themselves and no longer looking…[Read more]

You’re right, I concede. Also…
Conservatives usually make the tactical error of laughing at encroaching tyranny. It’s folly because laughter is a refusal to take something seriously — a giddy collective pushing-away of the unthreatening, the ignorable.
So to those stand-up comedians who say “it’s important that we can still laugh”: yeah, no.…[Read more]

Hi Gladstone, I think snowflake has become one of those terms that has been expanded to mean whatever one wants. I myself have fallen prey to using it to infer fragility, but I think its original usage as a mild epithet was to observe that someone feels they are special in the way that every snowflake is unique & special. This derives from the m…[Read more]

Edward, some interesting points but I am not sure why dealing with free speech shouldn’t be debated here. And that was the central point. These attempts to shut down free speech are growing and the people doing have been called ‘snowflakes’. My argument is stop calling them that and call them what they are. Trying to belittle them, as you say, is wrong.

It’s sad that defending such a basic tenet of liberal democracy as free speech is being left to disagreeable right-wing old men. Not that I have anything against such people. But they’re always going to be perceived as the bad guys by rebellious, anti-nomian young people both collectivist and individualist.
Now, shaming the weakest of the enemies…[Read more]

Not all liberals are snowflakes. however many are. A liberal who might close down a conservative at a university – that’s a snowflake (and a bully who uses numbers (and violence) alternatively of discussion. I must add that if a conservative might close down a liberal, UK Essay Writer then you definitely have a conservative snowflake. )

Indeed. It is used to rehsape how we think. The problem is that the inconsiderate then claim they are being criticised by the politically correct when they are rude.

Right on – well said, and political correctness has nothing to do with being polite or considerate.

Lots of young people have been called ‘snowflakes’ recently. This group likes ‘safe spaces’, appear easily offended and ‘call-out’ micro aggressions. But sadly all of this is about shutting down ideas and curtailing freedom of speech. This is not the work of a tender snowflake but of a militancy that appears to have taken a hold of many…[Read more]

Interesting points about the Conservative party. The brilliance of the Conservative party, from its supporters point of view, is that it is a formidable electoral machine. Part of its success is that it adapts to what voters want. It is important to remember that the party was initially an alliance between Tories and Whigs. Burke is credited as…[Read more]

Dividing into two parties is a very bad idea in First Past the Poll elections. Better not to waste your vote on a party doomed to failure unless it’s much, much better.
It’s important to have a respectable opposition; information tends to flow downwards from the educated to the ignorant.[4] Since the left controls academia and press, the right…[Read more]

Mr Robot is on its third season. It is as weird, compelling and contemporary as seasons one and two were. It touches on a lot of libertarian/anarchist themes but appears to dislike capitalism as government control. On the other hand, it could be an attack on crony capitalism and not genuine free market voluntarily exchange. Even if its creator…[Read more]

I can’t see Ukip ever becoming anything more than what it is/was: a protest movement against the EU and a home for nativist politics.
It would be great if there was a consistent liberal/libertarian voice in politics. Even if that party didn’t get elected, and frankly would it want power, it could help shape the agenda and force Statists to…[Read more]

Interested in what a libertarian government might look like if it got elected in the UK. What would be its priorities, could it limit government power and enact reform? My own view is that it should look at abolishing government departments first. Once gone they can’t make policy and interfere in people’s lives. I would embrace public services…[Read more]
