This is a major pet peeve of mine. Because the laws against advertising raw milk are strictly enforced in my region, people who have a connection must act like they are dealing drugs, careful to divulge the source only to those friends who have been vetted. It’s ridiculous, we’re talking about natural milk that humans have been drinking for…[Read more]

@srichman You got me. I thought this was for real until I got to the candidate quotes near the end. I couldn’t believe it, yet sadly I could, if you know what I mean.

Is it legal for police to withhold the complete vehicle accident report from someone being charged with homicide? The person I know was told they only disclose the report if it goes to trial, but yet the report is the basis for the DA pressing charges and will no doubt strong arm the accused into pleading guilty and taking a deal to avoid the…[Read more]

I’m starting to think requiring annual vehicle registrations is just another excuse to let police officers pull you over and investigate you for no real reason. The state has to know that some fraction of drivers are going to forget to renew because they’re distracted, or because the only for of notification sent is a single postcard that could…[Read more]

Are there any options for secure cloud storage that also have simple spreadsheet support? That’s the one thing I’m still stuck using Google drive for, since I want to be able to quickly access and edit a couple spreadsheets from multiple devices (Android and PC).

It might be worth mentioning that Spideroak when accessed via website or mobile app is not truly zero-knowledge. Your passphrase (and data?) are transmitted plain-text to a “special server” which does the encryption before passing it to the main servers. They say this only resides in encrypted memory during your active session and never written to…[Read more]

Test post. This site sure has some quirks to it, but I’ll give it a chance. It’s not very Android friendly using Firefox, even using the Android app.

I share your pain! I guess if I used the same OS/Browser as the developers, the site would be fast, smooth and non-quirky. But hang in there … it’s worth it.

What are your suggestions for choosing a passphrase to secure an Android device? You gave some pretty good advice on setting a passphrase, but when I went to encrypt my Android I discovered there is a 16-character password limit. I honestly don’t understand why any software today would impose a maximum password size at all, but that’s another…[Read more]

Thank you for writing this. Considering it has taken me weeks to pour over it I can’t imagine how much time you spent writing it. This has been a significant wakeup call to me, as I did not previously employ any of the measures you recommended and did not realistically take cyber security all that seriously. I have implemented a number of measures…[Read more]
